Mission
The Equestrian AIDS Foundation's mission is to provide financial support to individuals in the equestrian community afflicted with HIV or AIDS. We are here to help those in need during what is undoubtedly the most difficult period of their lives - to let them know that their friends care about them and want to improve the quality of their lives.

Background
In 1996, Foundation President, Robert Dover, an Olympic dressage rider with a small group of equestrians established the Equestrian AIDS Foundation to provide direct support to individuals rather than giving to larger AIDS-related non-profit organizations where too much of the funding is spent on overhead. The Foundation's overhead expenses are kept to a minimum through in-kind donations of office space, graphic design, and other administrative costs.

Challenges
The Foundation is confronting these misconceptions held by the general public:

  1. AIDS is predominantly a gay man's disease
  2. The equestrian community consists of only wealthy individuals who don't need help
  3. There is no longer a stigma associated with AIDS. Hence those in need are afraid to ask for financial assistance for fear of "being exposed."

Grant Recipients
AIDS does not discriminate. Men, women and children who are struggling with HIV and AIDS receive our financial support. Our Board of Directors with staff members, Jill Elisofon and Janise Gray review each applicant on a case-by-case basis to determine funding. The Foundation pays for many essentials that may include: medical needs, health insurance, food, housing, physical therapy, including riding when applicable, and more.

Individuals in all equestrian disciplines, of any age and diverse ethnic backgrounds are all eligible for Foundation support. Our grant recipients are from all walks of life whose common bond is their love of horses. The funds EAF distributes are limited only by the donations we receive.

You Can Make A Difference
Many in the equestrian community are blessed with a good life, good fortune, good health, and the special joy of working with horses. Consider our friends in the equestrian community who have lost all of these blessings due to AIDS. Please help us help those who are struggling with AIDS or HIV. Your contributions will make a difference! The more you give, the more we will give back to those in need.
